![]() ![]() Mac which became MobileMe which became iCloud and here we are with Apple positioning Time Machine destinations away from local servers even. The iDisk feature was first delivered on MacOS 9 (and people figured mods to get it to work partially on 8 and 7) and Apple clearly dropped this product over time after seeing how it worked and how supporting customers using it turned out. I have found Arq much nicer to work with, and the developer actually responds to emails, which is more than you'd get with using Time Machine.įor history buffs, Apple offered a Backup app with a red umbrella icon at the turn of the century to back up select Mac files to iDisk for paid subscribers. It's not Time Machine, but it is, I believe, the next best thing. I believe that Arq can backup to your Time Capsule and can do hourly backups. There have been lots of people who have suggested it, there have been lots of people who have said that it seems like something Apple should definitely do, but there is no way to do it at this point in time. I seem to remember a company which attempted to offer this several years ago as a commercial product (not even to iCloud, but Time Machine to "the cloud"), but I believe they discontinued it, and it was never particularly well-regarded in practice. Github is $5/mo for 50GB of Git-LFS while unlimited private repos are now free. There have been various attempts. Plus Atlassian has the best documentation for learning git in my opinion, whether one uses Bitbucket or not. And $10/mo for 100GB of Git-LFS storage is a fair price for a relatively simple way to manage large Unity projects. One note for Bitbucket is that if you already use Trello or plan to, the two systems are deeply integrated. Gitlab also has a great user interface for learning git project management.įor larger projects, I second the recommendation for Azure Devops Repos, as beyond the limitless Git-LFS storage aspect, Azure Repos offers an excellent browser interface (with a dark mode theme), four different styles of project management tools, a wiki and a plugin for integration with Visual Studio Code. Code is probably the least critical file type to worry about, as source control deals with text files the most easily, and with the least impact to your disk space.īy source control, I mean the same thing as version controlĬlick to expand.Another option is which allows for up to 10GB per private repository for free, without requring Git-LFS if you want to forestall that or have a reasonable amount of changing binaries in your project (Github and Bitbucket charge for above 1GB and require Git-LFS be installed). Textures, models, and audio clips can easily eat up disk space also. If you make frequent video edits and want to use source control, do your due diligence and find an appropriate source control solution. For example, video editing can eat up a lot of disk space. This will obviously be different from your own needs, but it's always good to be aware of the large files you are checking into your source control, especially if you plan on editing them frequently. My Visual SVN server is newer, probably since 2012, and it's currently less than 1GB. If I obliterated some of my old Battlefield 2 mods, it would probably be less than 2 GB total. As far as the sizes of my project(s), I've used my Perforce server since 2005, and it's less than 3 GB total. I used to store the backups on DVDs, but I'm soon going to transition to either more USB sticks or external hard drives, because the optical media will be expiring soon. I make backups of both source control servers every month or so, or after I've made significant changes to my project. ![]() They are both run from a USB stick attached to my home computer that I can remotely access on a laptop. I store my code and data separately using 2 different source control servers (Perforce/Helix for code and Visual SVN for data), in the event that one starts to outgrow the other. ![]()

Minimalist baker bread11/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() I’m not even sure I’m gluten intolerant, however I AM broke and was in need of bread, so I gave this a try! If you try this recipe, let us know! Leave a comment, rate it, and don’t forget to tag a photo #minimalistbaker on Instagram. Gluten-Free Flatbread (1 Bowl, 20 Minutes!).Fluffy Gluten-Free Naan (Yeast-Free, 20 Minutes!).It’s the answer to all your gluten-free sandwich, French toast, garlic bread, bread pudding, and crouton dreams! And it also pairs beautifully with a bowl of soup (like our 1-Pot Everyday Lentil Soup or Easy 1-Pot Tomato Soup) for an easy weeknight meal. We hope you LOVE this gluten-free bread! It’s: Lastly, for best texture, we let it cool fully before slicing, and it’s ready to enjoy! It starts at a higher temperature to develop a golden-brown crust, then we drop the heat to let it cook fully on the inside without burning. When the wet and dry ingredients combine, the most lovely, pourable batter forms and is ready for adding to a loaf pan.Īfter a quick hour (got laundry, anyone?) in a warm spot, the batter doubles in size and is ready to go in the oven. The final dry ingredient is salt for added flavor! While the whole grain flours add structure and wholesomeness, the potato starch is key for keeping it light (vs. The magic combo for this recipe is brown rice flour, oat flour, potato starch, and sorghum flour. When it’s frothy, we add ground chia seeds as the egg replacement, keeping this recipe friendly for our vegan and egg-free friends. You’ll know it worked if the mixture gets frothy like the photo below. Just make sure the water is the right temperature (100 – 110 F / 38-43 C) and be sure to include the sugar, which is essential because it feeds the yeast. If you’ve never used yeast, don’t worry - it’s easier than you think. This beginner-friendly bread starts with a packet of yeast to make it rise and give it those lovely air pockets. So in that case, I recommend sticking with the 1/4 cup for the best results.Īlso, butter and honey on top (while still warm) is an absolute MUST.If you think making gluten-free bread sounds difficult, it’s time to kick that idea to the curb! When it comes to making bread at home, we’re into the dump, mix, rise, and bake style (a.k.a. The texture is super moist, they weren’t too crumbly, and the sweet cornbread-spicy jalapeño pairing was spot on. I actually tried reducing the amount of sugar by half but wasn’t as pleased with the end result. I was super pleased with the way these little guys turned out. (I used pumpkin puree but the recipe calls for applesauce – either will work.) Plus, there’s two jalapeños in there, which I’m told is good for your metabolism. While there’s still a touch of butter, there’s no box mixes involved, half the sugar is replaced with honey, and it includes a full serving of fruit. You can learn about the Native American and Southern origins of cornbread here. It also requires just one bowl and is healthier than your average cornbread, all things considered. ![]() This recipe is super simple and comes together in about 30 minutes. I decided to make these gluten-free because I’ve been playing around more with GF recipes lately and was up for the challenge. In fact, although it’s been in my “bookmarks,” I have neglected to make it until now. This recipe is adapted from a version Iowa Girl Eats made that I’ve been eyeing for months. While I could comfortably just have a salad for dinner, I didn’t want our guest – or John – to be left wondering ‘what else is there?’ So, cornbread muffins it was. This lovely salad from How Sweet It Is caught my eye so I knew it had to be on the menu. The other night we had a new friend over and I wanted to make something outside of my weekly rotations. ![]()

Jetbrains datagrip eer11/28/2023 ![]() All plugins that I used, did exactly what I was expecting. The benefit over VS Code for me is the quality of plugins in JetBrains IDEs. All other neccessary and specific tools for Xamarin work as expected (hot-reload, formatting, emulator-connection.). Surprising to me, that using Rider for a Xamarin is more fun than VS for Mac, since VS Mac's origin is Xamarin Studio.īut I have to admit that I was convinced mainly by the better features and completions in the C#-Code and the better unit test-suite, so the overall workflow is more neatless. I switched to Rider and now I'm using it for all my. So everything seems clear and its easy to find my tools.įor a Xamarin-App I started to use Visual Studio for Mac but neither the UI is attractive nor the features could convince me. It's very satisfying for me that it has a whole bunch of features but the UI is not overloaded with several buttons and toolbars. I'm using WebStorm as my default IDE for all javascript-projects. Unfortunately Rider is quite expensive, and since for me it's just for hobby, for now I just jump from EAP to EAP version for the "legally" free "extendable" trial periods, and hope that there will be a new one released before the current one expires :) Like comment: Like comment: 2 likes IMO the WebStorm plan is not too bad, it definitely worth its price. Getting back to the price, you can find some of the IDEs have Community versions which are all free. I'm thinking about refactoring tools, code completion and performance tips too.Īfter feeling comfortable in two of the JetBrains IDEs, I find it very easy to get up to speed with any of the others - as occasionally I use IDEA Community and Android Studio as well. Since I already familiar with WebStorm I found my way around Rider quite easily, and I realized it gives more support for Unity specific code than VS. My company pays it now, but I'm sure I'd buy it also if that would be the case.Īlso not long ago I started to learn Unity, for which I find Rider better than Visual Studio. Actually I never had any performance issues like others said before me - although that's a fact it eats more RAM than probably anything :) Yes, it's a paid product but one of the cheapest along all JetBrains IDEs. I just love all the integrated tools and functionalities that come with it out of the box. ![]() I changed from VSCode almost a year ago, and now I believe I'd never go back. I use WebStorm for frontend for work and also for personal projects every day. They're expensive tools, but for me they're vastly cheaper than the hours I save. Try them - IntelliJ works with more than just Java, too - and see if they'll work for you. IntelliJ and P圜harm both have good Community (ie, free-as-in-beer) offerings, and of course Android Studio is also free. But for me, they work out of the box for all the things that the free alternatives do, but without hours, if not days, of tweaking. I have friends who laugh at me, and explain that they have configured VSCode, or Atom, or vim, or EMACS to do all the things that the JetBrains suite can do. ![]() It's great being able to switch between projects and languages without really changing working practice. I'm currently routinely using P圜harm, Datagrip, WebStorm, CLion, and IntelliJ - and the Android Studio, which is IntelliJ in disguise anyway. The key thing for me, as a polyglot developer, is being able to very rapidly dip into a new language in a largely unfamiliar language, and get some basic work done without having to spend ages learning a new IDE as well. Since then, I used IntelliJ on some Java projects, and became a full Toolbox user, so I have them all. I used P圜harm back before there was a Community Edition, and was blown away by how much more effective I was. ![]()

National school bus driver shortage11/28/2023 ![]() In an effort to ensure no child is left stranded at their local bus stop, some schools are attempting to entice parents into driving their children to school, thereby stepping into the role of school bus driver. “If we’re not going to give children the ability to ride a school bus, we need to make the roads safer for them to either walk or bike to school,” Baptista said.Ĭivil Beat’s education reporting is supported by a grant from Chamberlin Family Philanthropy.A nationwide school bus driver shortage has left districts across the country grappling with how to get students to and from school in a timely manner. While Baptista said she doesn’t have many concerns with public transportation in Hawaii, she is worried about children’s safety on the streets. The high-schooler will be taking the Skyline Rail to school. Marissa Baptista, a board member of the Hawaii Congress of Parents, Teachers, and Students and a mother of two public school students at Moanalua, has permitted her high school daughter to receive the HOLO pass as a part of the EXPRESS program. The city bus does not have a minimum age requirement so children will be able to use it alone.Īddressing safety concerns, Tanaka said, “I have to rely on my partners, the city and county and all of the other guys, that they do their best to provide a safe transport.” The HOLO pass will be loaded into the student’s ID card with parental permission. The city’s Department of Transportation Services Director Roger Morton called the program a “win-win,” saying that it will have the added benefit of promoting public transportation and environmental sustainability as well as easing traffic congestion.Įligible students will get a free HOLO pass valued at $400 for 10 months. “With the advent of Skyline coming on board, we believe that this will help get people acclimated to mass transit,” Tanaka said. Tanaka said the new rail service that began earlier this month in Honolulu would provide more options. With two weeks to go before school starts, the DOE encouraged families to familiarize their children with public transit. Services on Lanai and Molokai will remain the same. School bus service will continue on Maui and the Big Island, but there will be changes. Kauai’s Hanalei Elementary, Kapaa Elementary, Middle and High will also have suspended services. The affected schools on Oahu include Aiea, Campbell, Castle, Kailua, Kapolei, Mililani, Nanakuli, Pearl City, Waianae and Waipahu. ![]() “There’s just not enough qualified drivers in the pool and school transport requires a different level of CDL licensing,” Tanaka said. School bus drivers are part time and must have a commercial drivers license, which can be a complicated process. He noted that the numbers may change as other drivers are hired or leave. Just two days ago, two more drivers left the system, according to Randall Tanaka, the assistant superintendent for the DOE’s office of facilities and operations. ![]() While the state’s eight bus service contractors had 650 drivers before the pandemic, the DOE said it currently needs 230 more drivers to fully staff the bus routes. Assistant superintendent Randall Tanaka says officials tried offering incentives to recruit more school bus drivers, but the state still came up short. The state tried to recruit more school bus drivers by offering signing bonuses, job fairs and flexible schedules, but it still came up short after 76 drivers quit their jobs over the last year, according to a press release. ![]() The Expanding Ridership to Educate Students in School program began in the previous school year as the state grappled with a driver shortage that stemmed from the coronavirus pandemic and was exacerbated by competition with more lucrative full-time jobs in other fields. Instead, eligible students will be given free passes to use public transportation when the new school year begins on Aug. The state Department of Education announced Tuesday that bus service will be canceled or suspended at 10 high schools on Oahu and four schools on Kauai. ![]() The Department of Education canceled or suspended bus service for 14 schools statewide after dozens of drivers quit.įor the second year in a row, school bus service will be interrupted at several campuses due to a longstanding driver shortage, forcing many students to take public transportation. ![]()

Land rover discovery 211/28/2023 ![]() ![]() A Premium model brought all the luxury accoutrements you could want.īut for all its upmarket aspirations, the second-generation Discovery still retained the off-road prowess Land Rover customers demanded. Buyers were offered five- or seven-seat versions the latter’s rearmost seats were forward-facing rather than the Discovery Mk1’s foldaway jump seats, and seven-seaters boasted self-levelling rear air suspension as standard. On the engine front there was a five-cylinder Td5 diesel or 4.0-litre V8, and both units featured greater electronic control in the quest for improved performance and economy. While still not especially complex by modern standards, the Discovery Mk2 introduced more technology to the mix, from electronic traction control and hill descent control to an optional ‘Active Cornering Enhancement’ (ACE) suspension system. It’s a notably different vehicle to the first car in many ways: it was both longer and wider than the original car and its cabin was arguably more luxurious, having ditched the hard-touch Conran design for something more sophisticated. The Discovery Mk2 – often known now as the Discovery 2 – was produced from 1998 to 2004 and looked to build on the first generation’s success. By the time production ended in 1998, numerous updates had included revised engines: a 2.0-litre MPi petrol unit was introduced, the diesel was updated to a more refined 300Tdi unit, and the V8 enlarged to 3.9 litres – and a facelift in 1994 that tweaked the styling, interior and added more kit. Power came from 2.5-litre turbodiesel or 3.5-litre Rover V8 engines (initially carburettor with fuel-injection later) and being a Land Rover, the Discovery was supremely capable in the rough stuff. Developed relatively quickly and on a modest budget, the Discovery borrowed the chassis and most of the running gear from the Range Rover and went on sale in three-door form only, reportedly to avoid it cannibalising sales from the more prestigious sibling.Ī more practical five-door arrived a year later, but what stood out for many was the interior light and airy thanks to the ‘Alpine’ windows, Terence Conran had a hand in its design and its fresh approach garnered a British Design Award. Launched at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show, the fresh, modern design perfectly bridged the gap between the utilitarian and luxurious. But Land Rover wanted to add a third option somewhere between the two – and so the Land Rover Discovery Mk1 was born. Some three decades ago, buyers wanting a famous British mud-plugger had the choice of a rugged workhorse in the Ninety/One Ten, or the much plusher Range Rover. If required, we can also fit and install parts for you at our showroom in Cannock, Staffordshire. The Land Rover Discovery Mk1 is a very practical and capable SUV that still stands as a great family car today. The Discovery 2 still made easy work of even the most demanding terrain! Order Discovery 2 Parts and Accessories Online Today However, this didn’t impact its off-road capabilities. With all the upgrades, the Discovery 2 did increase in weight, length and width. The option of Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE) delivered handling that was class-leading for its day, and rigidity was enhanced with the addition of an extra chassis cross-member. Drivetrains also become more sophisticated and the running gear was upgraded. Although this didn’t improve the fuel efficiency significantly, it did ensure an extra smooth drive.
